Poppy Sketches ©Kellie Day

Rambling Woman

I love lollygagging. You know, not having to be cracking the whip at work, pushed by production. But instead, letting projects blossom in between morning meditation, coffee, research on pinterest and maybe a load of laundry. Things that some might consider “idle time”. But really, this idle time is the […]

My first-ever, family art exhibit! Karen Day, Floyd Day

First-Ever Family Art Exhibit

As long as I can remember, mom has been creating art. From her first experiments in etchings in our yellow house in Holland, Michigan, she created sweeping scenes of sand dunes on the edge of Lake Michigan, and geese, with long, elegant necks, dangling their legs into cool clear water. […]

Hidden, Mixed Media Stencil Experiment

Today was a rough day, for whatever reason. So I took a break, made some ice coffee, and stepped back into the studio. It was one of those days I would have loved to taken a two hour nap and thrown it to the wind. But I heard the voices […]

Summer Flowers, mixed media flower painting

Inspiration is everywhere and I was deeply moved by a quick camping trip we did this weekend to Hartman Rocks in Gunnison, Colorado. It rained like Vietnam the first night and I was so happy I sprung for the cabin, not the tent! We played monopoly all night, and got […]

Nutty Neighbors & Bursting Blossoms

Headed on vacation tomorrow to see my family in South Carolina. This is not where we are from, but it’s where my parents ended up. Lucky for us, we’ll get to see all the kiddos put their feets in the sand. And I look forward very much to reading a […]

Aspen Dance, 4' x 4', mixed media on canvas by Kellie Day, ©2014, $3,600

Aspen Dance

Sometimes when I am walking in an aspen forest my feet ground into the earth so deeply, I can feel the pounding of tree roots conversing.   When grasses brush up against my legs and leaves shake like dried beans above my head, the whole, moving being swallows me up – The […]

Que Sera Sera

Que Sera Sera, mixed media on canvas, 40″ x 30″ Whatever will be, will be … and so this painting took over and I let it become what it was –  unhindered by logic and decision making – a very foreign way of painting for me. But it felt good […]

Sketch of dead sunflower

My new painter eyes are awakening to the subtle beauties this time of year has to offer. Never before have I noticed all the dried grasses poking up through mud and snow. Nor the heavy sunflowers hanging by their last thread, weighed down by seeds for next year, food for […]

Poppy on Canvas

The poppy was so brilliant I could only focus on just one, so as to get the detail. I’m inspired to do more details of beautiful things in nature. This painting has hand-made letter stamps, watercolor on rice paper and layers of brilliant petals with secrets inside! FUN!

Poppies

They opened overnight. Brilliant orange bliss called from my back porch, and my son and I admired them from our early morning sleepiness. As soon as Grammi and Grandpa arrived I set up plein air in the backyard and began painting a quick rendition. Can’t wait to do a large […]

Sunflowers

Summer is finally in full swing here in Colorado and the colors are tremendous. I couldn’t resist painting the bright and cheerful sunflowers on my kitchen table. At  22″ x 30″ the painting is full of movement and color. It  began with watercolor and went to fun lines with india […]

Spring Flowers

What I learned from this painting is that a color can’t be captured in one shade. It is represented with many. And the eye sees it as one, joyful site. Spring is here, windy as it is, and it’s so delightful, like food for the eyes, to see flowers. My […]

Juniper

Winter is holding on with a firm grasp for every last day. Saturday was blustery and grey. It was tempting to stay inside, but a hike puts you fully in the elements, and then they don’t matter anymore. There was the juniper I look at every time I pass, yet […]

Chaos Order

MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE, WATERCOLOR, INK, Colorado Ripping up beautiful bits of old books that just sit in the closet anyway, and admiring my granny’s china that I just found in the crawlspace. Gold chocolate wrappers, tazo boxes, and more.

Orchid

WATERCOLOR, INK, PASTEL, Ophir, Colorado Inspired by Japanese paintings and my lovely orchid. I painted the leaves, went in with india ink when it was still slightly wet, and finally highlighted with pastel. Personal stamps were added at the bottom.
