The fortitude and solace of this animal reminds me of the vast plains on which it resides, and the strength of the people who lived here before us. My father drove us out into the middle of a herd when I was 12, in the back of a pick up truck. We lived in western Kansas at the time, he was a construction manager, and sometimes I got to steer the truck and wear his helmet. He still talks about the rattlesnakes in the outhouse.
