Pyrolean Red, Iridescent Gold, Cadmium Orange – I scooped big fingers full out of Golden Paint jars and slathered them on an old canvas. I mainly just used my hands for this painting, and some scraping tools.
An old espresso pot painting sat in my garage for years and I was going to gesso over it to create these sunflowers that had been brewing in my head. But when the time came to cover the old painting, I just wanted to paint directly over it.
Something about NOT starting with a clean white canvas was less intimidating – and way more interesting. I left the bottom of the old painting showing, and you can just see the rest of the word “espresso” in the lower right corner.
Right now experimenting with big bold colors and shapes that are directed only by my heart is leading the way. I am more excited about painting than I ever have been before.
“Flowers for John” will hang in the Ridgway Public Library from Saturday, September 12 through November 13. Opening reception is this Saturday, September 12 from 4-7 pm. Stop by if you’re in the area!
This painting is dedicated to my Uncle John, who passed away this week. Your enouragement and spirit will always be in my heart.
Have a wonderful holiday weekend!
