Little Bird, this Japanese-style songbird painting, was a fun exploration of letting india ink drip all over the place.

My grandparents traveled the world many times, and I always remember these prints around their home. I am lucky enough to have one in my own home now that they are gone.

This painting is a commission. If you’re interested in having me paint one for you, email me here!

Happy New Year!

  1. LOVE IT! and the painting. Great sound effects and fun. You go girl! Kellie, do you sketch out your ideas first before you commit to “the big canvas” every time? I thought of you today when I purchased some rice paper with Chinese lettering on it – you would love it. Happy and creative new and full year. 😉

      Hi Andrea,

I often sketch out my ideas in my journal first, especially the composition. Then I sketch the composition directly on the canvas before I start, very roughly. For this painting I did a lot of research on songbirds and Japanese prints before I started. I then sketched the bird on light watercolor paper and actually collaged that on the canvas.

I’m working on an online class where I’ll be showing complete painting from start to finish, and lots of instruction. Stay tuned! Thanks for your continued support Andrea 🙂
