This Wild Playground

The town of Ridgway, Colorado is run by creative, forward-thinking people who are highly supportive of the arts. They recently asked me to write about why I came to Ridgway, why I love this place so much. Here is my story… I live in a wild playground. A valley full of […]

Far from Blue, mixed media aspen tree painting

I have been trying to figure out the meaning of life again. I do that every now and then. And with all these leaves falling, and the coming of winter, I remember on some very deep level, that things do have to come to an end, eventually. The only thing […]

Sea of Green, mixed media aspen trees

Hello aspen trees. This mixed media aspen tree painting began as something I was creating for a client. It started out with lots of intricate background details. Which ended up being covered by paint. Here’s how it looked in its early stages: I don’t know whether this is bad or good that […]

The foundation of most of my paintings, is interaction

The Foundation of a Painting is in the Knowing

Roots of an aspen painting – first the skiing, observing, driving my partner cuckoo by stopping to take photos. Then the rough, fun collage backgrounds… stay tuned for the paint throwing.

Where the Sun Sleeps, 61" x 30" diptych on canvas by Kellie Day ©2013

Where the Sun Sleeps

Just got back from a restful week in South Carolina, where I started this aspen painting in my parents’ garage. Their garage also serves as their art studios, as both my parents are artists. My mom paints horses, my dad paints cows. My mom uses wild, passionate brush strokes and […]

No Limits

Thanks to a friend for inspiring this piece. One of the beautiful scraps of paper on it reads: “Learn something new Try something different Convince yourself That you have no Limits” – Brian Tracy Which is funny, because the hardest part for me about starting to paint was convincing myself […]

Here are the aspen trees from the Portland trail in Ouray, when you come up the first hill from the creek. In the morning this spot is enchanting. There’s an old cabin you can’t even see anymore it’s so overtaken by the ground cover. It’s a world of greens in […]

Spring Dreams

Spring Dreams was painted during a chaotic, sleep deprived week. I had promised the painting as an auction item to help raise funds for an animal shelter in Telluride. My dad was in the hospital, my son needed me, and I had my graphic design business to run. Life was […]

Magic Forest

These aspen trees morphed into at least six different paintings before they became Magic Forest. They are a place of comfort, imagination, joy, experiment and bliss. They are the reflection of so many aspens I’ve hiked through, skied through, or just stared at from wherever I was. Like yesterday, on […]

Shushing through soft quiet snow in southwest Colorado mountains, I brake trail and the work feels good. Edging over barely covered rocky drop-offs, it is early season and I am eager. Aspens lend long blue shadows over the rolling terrain, dark navy corners contrast sparkling crystals. It’s so still and […]

Desert Trees

Camping at Hittle Bottom, across from the Fisher Towers near Moab, UT this fall with my family, there were two trees wrapped around each other.  In the distance, desert towers I had once climbed called my attention from every view. The campsite was flat, and a peacock lived in the […]

Solitary and austere. On the edge of a cliff above the Grand Canyon, on a rocky ledge in Indian Creek, or deep in the desert southwest. This juniper tree has been in so many of my adventures.
