How to Make your Paintings More Professional

how to make your paintings more professional

This week in our Facebook group poll, a lot of women asked how to make their paintings look more professional. In this video I give you SIX TIPS for moving your paintings to a more professional level.

If you keep doing the same thing you have been doing for years, you’ll stay in the same place. Sometimes it takes a BIG MOVE to really accelerate your art.

Sometimes artists believe that trying to make things look “accurate” is going to be more professional. But that’s not the ticket. That’s painting with the logical side of your brain, NOT your expressive side.

Paintings that move people emotionally are made from the expressive side of your brain – the human side that shows feeling.

Here are six big tips for making more professional paintings:

1. CREATE A FOUNDATION
When you first start out painting, it’s important to take as many varied classes as you can to build a foundation of skill for color, different mediums to add interest to your work, and different teachers with different style so that you aren’t just imitating your favorite teacher.

Keep in mind this will only take you so far. Classes are ONLY the foundation. You will hit a point where you can’t take it any farther. And you will know you hit that point when you feel stuck, and know you aren’t moving ahead any more.

That’s because classes only teach you a technique, and there is SOOO much more to making professional paintings. Let’s explore that….

2. USE YOUR FILTER
Your filter is everything that’s made you YOU in this life – your influences, your passions – are you passionate about fishing? Biking? Traveling?…

Your personality is the soul you came into this world with – are you loud and boisterous, quiet and graceful? Messy and clumsy like me? Play this up in your art to create a unique voice that will enable you to stand out in the art world.

3. BREAK THROUGH THE “HUMAN BARRIER”
The Human Barrier is everything that holds you back from your highest self – your fears, your negative self talk your lack of belief in yourself.

Until you can unabashedly let all this go, you will not be making your highest , most amazing art.

Get out of your own way so your beatify and life can shine.

4. PUSH IT
Push your painting beyond your first attempts! I see so many women create a painting. (Like my early painting of a succulent. It was watercolor with illustration over it.) Then they stop, and that’s as far as they push themselves.

Great art is about taking great risks. It is not about playing small.

Ask yourself – what’s different or unique about my art?

When you make a first attempt at a painting, keep going. Make another one bigger or bolder. Then make another one and try new colors and shapes for example.

Get loose and have fun.

Slowly you will start to make art that’s different than everyone else’s. MAKE A LOT OF PAINTINGS AND GET OUR OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE!!

This is what I work on every day with women and their art. We use a proven process to push them into new and wonderful places with their art.

5. CONDUCT YOURSELF PROFESSIONALLY
If you want to be a professional, artist, you have to act like one. Use high quality paints and materials, along with finishes for brilliant color and presence.

Hang your paintings professionally and consistently, with consistent pricing and tags.

Don’t cheap out – you have to spend money to make money. DON’T PLAY SMALL. People are afraid to spend on themselves because they don’t believe they will get your investment BACK.

You can’t expect buyers to believe in your art if you don’t believe in yourself.

6. GET AN ART MENTOR
The greatest minds, creators and business people all have mentors that show them the way to expanding into their HIGHEST selves.

… Someone who can see you and help you put all the pieces together, to step into  your greatest art.

… Someone who can show you all the processes you weren’t aware of.

A mind expanded beyond it’s original shape never goes back.

You have all of these amazing gifts and abilities inside of – a mentor can show you how to bring them out and shine!!

Once you make all of these shifts, it’s an amazing feeling to know you are using your greatest gifts.

You can do a show and begin to sell your work, like many of my students do within just a few months.

You get to tell your friends you are an artist and feel that authentic purpose in yourself that no one else can give you.
