Colorful Colorado, painting of deer in aspen trees

This painting has taken months to finish. There are numerous videos of the process of painting this on my instagram feed @kelliedayart. (Scroll down to see the full "making of" video). I began by getting some larger canvases, and painting a pair of deer that had become entangled by their antlers when fighting. A state wildlife person had shot one of their antlers from a distance, and freed the pair. This painting started off as a painting of them freed, and then slowly after many many layers and colors, the second deer disappeared, and the painting became about this deer emerging cautiously from the woods.

I always say that paintings are never finished, they just stop in interested places. I decided to stop here.

My son suggested I paint this deer in a brighter color, however deer always take a moment to see in the woods, so I wanted him to be a quiet character.

The background of this painting changed MANY times, as you'll see in the videos. It started off with spray paint and tons of colors, then turned yellow, then went to a quiet palette, and then back to these abstract colorful Colorado colors.

When all was said and done, the leaves remind me a little bit of a Klimt painting. I always say that paintings are never finished, they just stop in interested places. I decided to stop here.
