The Importance of Being Unproductive in Art

the importance of being unproductive in art

Hi there,

Remember a few weeks ago when I said I was filming a video about all the “unproductive” things I do in my studio? Well… it took me longer than expected to get it to you with all the art retreat stuff going on. … But here it is!

It’s really important to prioritize our art – especially above all the less important stuff in life like cleaning the house. But I have to be really honest sometimes on my painting days it’s hard for me just to go straight to the studio. It’s like I have to blow off a little steam before I get in there.

I created a video for you just to show you some of the funny things I end up doing before getting to my actual painting time.  Somehow, as long as I don’t screw off for too long, it helps me really sink in and focus when I do create.

Let’s jump in! …

In this (funny) short video, I’m showing you all the ways I seem to be unproductive in my art – the real, honest truth about what happens when I go into my studio. But somehow this helps me focus more than ever when I actually jump in.

You’ll probably recognize yourself in some of these!

Here’s the thing: I’ve made peace with it.

I’ve learned that sometimes what looks like lack of productivity is actually my creative brain warming up. And sometimes it’s just procrastination – and that’s okay too, as long as we notice the difference.

If weeks go by and you’re not getting any painting done, then your fun “unproductive” time has slipped into avoidance – so just be honest with yourself about that.

The pressure to be constantly productive was killing my creativity. So I let it go.

Now I give myself permission to wander, putter, and yes – even avoid the canvas sometimes. And my paintings are better for it.

Watch the video and leave a comment below – which one of these is YOUR favorite way to “not paint”? I’d love to hear!

Happy painting (or not painting),

With love, Kellie

P.S. The video is short and silly – just like me before I actually start painting. 😊
