Desert Coyote Painting
When I was a wilderness ranger in Sedona in 92 and 94, I hiked the red dirt trails every day, but usually was never on the trail… exploring.
All of us young Rangers lived in an abandoned Frank Lloyd White ranch house above Oak Creek Canyon below Cathedral rocks. Which is now developed.
Every night we went to sleep to coyotes howling. We smoked hand rolled cigarettes and drink beer on hot summer evenings. We dragged our mattresses out on the many porches to sleep under the stars, and skinny-dipped in the creek, where there was nobody.
We had tarantulas, mice, and of course, ghosts. It was said the house was built on “an Indian burial ground”, but who knows? This was the best summer of my youth.
