3 Ways to Get Out of Perfectionism in Your Art

3 Ways to Get Out of Perfectionism in Your Art

I get sooooo many emails from women who are struggling with being stuck in perfectionism in their Art. Today I want to talk with you about the 3 things it takes to finally break out of your perfectionism, and start painting freely.

If you’re stuck in perfectionism, you can freeze up and not move forward with your painting, and have unfinished paintings stacking up in your house because you’re afraid to ruin them.

You’ll never develop your own unique voice and share what’s special about you, because you’re stuck in LOGICAL painting (real creative freedom comes from inspired painting )

Your painting practice won’t flourish because it’s boring doing the same old thing and staying stuck.

A lot of people think that if they just keep going in their studio and painting they will break through this.

But guess what the definition of insanity is? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

The truth is that perfection in painting is a place women get stuck in for a long time. And for many of them, they never truly create their greatest paintings or live their most joyful lives because they STAY stuck.

Perfectionism in Art is about these three things:

  1. Fear – fear of getting out of your comfort zone and trying something new. But why is that so scary? Because you’re going to make something ugly and have wasted your time, your paint, and your canvas.
  2. Tools – you need to know HOW to break free and try new things to get out of your usual routine. This means fun, playful tools so you know WHAT to do to get out of perfection, and HOW to do it.
  3. Ideas – Sometimes people don’t even know what’s POSSIBLE with their art. How do you put the pieces together (your new bravery and tools and willingness to try new things), if you don’t know where you’re going. Inspirational ideas of what it looks like to break OUT OF PERFECTIONISM are incredibly helpful, so that you know what it looks like to move to new, exciting frontiers with your Art.

Once you get these 3 things and move out of perfectionism you can start finishing your paintings and really truly expressing who you are in your art, with DELIGHT and with your UNIQUE voice.

And guess what? This kind of artistic freedom effects everything else in your life. Because most women who are struggling with perfectionism in their Art, experience it in the rest of their life too. (Art IS life).

It’s like my student Nathalie who was making pretty paintings, but she knew she had SO MUCH more inside of her. We worked together to help her break free from her fears of ruining things, try new ways of pushing her paintings together in a safe place with my guidance, and helped her tune into inspired ideas on where she could take her paintings.

And now she’s making big gorgeous paintings, she’s happier than ever about her Art, and she’s been selling them too! (Tune in next Friday when I’ll be interviewing Nathalie about her Art journey).
