Allow Yourself to Suck at Art

Allow yourself to suck at art

Allow yourself to suck at art

I once walked out of an oil painting class because I felt so bad about my painting.

I could blame it on the teacher, or the class, but really it was me.

I was so hard on myself while I was painting that I couldn’t even paint. The conversation that was happening in my head was paralyzing.

I had no idea that it was okay to go through a sucky period with my painting. And I had ZERO tools for working through the challenges. … or knowing how to get my painting to a place where I really like them.

I didn’t know that you have to allow yourself to be bad at painting sometimes. Especially when you’re getting going. This kind of freedom is EXACTLY what unlocks the door to great discoveries.

Allowing yourself to suck at Art is a very vulnerable thing to do.

No one likes to feel vulnerable. You have to face that fear that you may not be that good after all.

One of the biggest wins that got me out of this slump was discovering mixed media painting. With mixed media I could combine all kinds of fun materials, AND I could keep building layers until I really liked my painting.

To move beyond painting badly is really a four-part recipe:

  1. Be willing to be bad at it for a while.
  2. Stop being so hard on yourself and be willing to be vulnerable.
  3. Keep trying different mediums until you find the one that makes you sing. (I took all kinds of classes before I found mixed media painting.)
  4. Get the tools to know how to work through the awkward parts of your painting and create something you love.

And if you’ve done all that and you want someone to help you get their NOW and not waste any more time, I can help…
