Painting over the one that didn’t turn out
August 2, 2026Cindy had a “twinge” for a very long time to do her art. It was always in the back of her mind. But she told herself she wasn’t good enough, didn’t know how to draw, and had no formal training. So she stopped herself from even trying.
After 20 years of not painting, she finally listened to it and made her art a priority. One year later she held her first solo show and sold 22 paintings in that one show, and 32 for the year. “This changed my life. I mean it, it’s just such a positive experience.”
Watch her interview to hear how Cindy did it below:
Twenty years ago, Cindy tried watercolor classes, struggled through a few pieces, and quit. She figured if it wasn’t working, she just couldn’t do it. The twinge never left, though. Then, retired and planning to spend the winter in northern Michigan, she realized she needed something creative in her life again.
Once she made that decision, answers arrived. An extra bedroom became her studio, and she found me. We began working together in my mentoring program.
“It always felt like my art was something extra, like something I needed to fit in,” she told me. “But I moved it up, to make it what it needed to be. It’s not easy to say, ‘This is for me.'”
Over the weeks and months, Cindy began to really like her own work, enough to keep going into my grad program too.
Embracing her art taught her the freedom of expression, and not to be afraid of things anymore. She’s happy with what she paints now, and it doesn’t matter to her if someone else doesn’t feel the same. That confidence has spilled into other parts of her life too, she’s even been able to share it with younger people around her.

With love and creativity,
Kellie
